“Open To Work” Isn't A Strategy

Why “Open to Work” Isn’t a Job Search Strategy

Many candidates think updating their LinkedIn profile with the green “Open to Work” banner is enough.

Unfortunately, it rarely is.

In today's SaaS and AI hiring market, visibility helps, but it doesn't replace having a proactive job search strategy.

Recruiters Can't Read Minds

One of the most common conversations we have goes something like:

"I've been looking for months but haven't had many interviews."

When we review their profile, we often find:

  • A generic LinkedIn headline
  • No recent activity
  • Limited detail on achievements
  • No clear indication of what roles they're targeting

Being open to opportunities is useful.

Being visible and marketable is what gets results.

Position Yourself Properly

Hiring managers and recruiters search LinkedIn using keywords.

If your profile doesn't clearly show:

  • Industry experience
  • Role specialisation
  • Performance metrics
  • Technical expertise
  • Market knowledge

You're less likely to appear in relevant searches.

Your profile should answer three questions immediately:

  1. What do you do?
  2. How good are you at it?
  3. What are you looking for next?

Networking Still Matters

Many of the best opportunities never make it to job boards.

The strongest candidates:

  • Build relationships with recruiters
  • Engage with industry content
  • Speak to their network regularly
  • Attend events and communities
  • Stay visible within their market

Opportunities often come through conversations long before they become vacancies.

Don't Wait Until You Need A Job

The most successful candidates are continuously managing their careers.

Even when they're happy.

That doesn't mean constantly interviewing.

It means:

  • Building relationships
  • Understanding market trends
  • Tracking compensation benchmarks
  • Knowing what opportunities exist

Career management is an ongoing process, not a reaction to becoming unhappy.

The Market Rewards Preparation

Candidates often spend more time preparing for interviews than they do preparing for a job search.

The reality is that a strong profile, clear positioning and an active network create opportunities long before an interview is scheduled.

The candidates who consistently land the best roles are rarely relying on luck.

At GroTech Search, we see the biggest difference between average and top candidates long before the interview stage.

The best candidates don't just become available.

They make themselves discoverable.
